Justin Krometis

Research Associate Professor, Intelligent Systems Division

Justin Krometis is a Research Associate Professor with the Virginia Tech National Security Institute; he also holds an affiliate position in the Math Department at Virginia Tech.

His research is a mix of parameter estimation and uncertainty quantification with artificial intelligence and machine learning (AI/ML). His parameter estimation work focuses on test and evaluation and on Bayesian data analysis to incorporate and balance data and expert opinion into decision-making, to estimate model parameters, including high- or even infinite-dimensional quantities, from noisy data, and to design experiments to maximize the information gained. His AI/ML work includes multimodal fusion to improve model performance and robustness, and in application of algorithms such as reinforcement learning and large language models to DoD/DoW operations.

Prior to joining VTNSI, Dr. Krometis worked as a computational scientist supporting high-performance computing and as a modeler supporting hurricane, pandemic, and other emergency preparedness. He holds Ph.D., M.S., and B.S. degrees in Math and a B.S. degree in Physics, all from Virginia Tech.
