Kevin Farinholt joins the Virginia Tech National Security Institute as Part-Time Faculty with research experience in embedded sensing, active material systems, energy harvesting, and condition-based monitoring / maintenance. His work has focused on sensor and hardware design, laboratory and field testing, data analytics, and the development of embedded diagnostic models suitable for implementation on resource limited devices.
Over his career Farinholt has worked to support national security missions with the Department of Defense and Department of Energy. This has included research positions at Los Alamos National Laboratory, as well as senior researcher and technical fellow roles with Virginia-based small businesses focused on advanced condition monitoring and sensing technologies for DoD, DOE, and industry sponsors. He also served as research manager for the Commonwealth Center for Advanced Manufacturing. Farinholt has been an active collaborator with academic, industry, and government partners, and this research has resulted in over 140 publications as book chapters, journal articles, conference papers, and technical reports.
Farinholt received his Ph.D., M.S., and B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from Virginia Tech, and was recognized as a National Defense Science and Engineering Graduate Fellow, and a Virginia Space Grant Consortium Fellow for his research with the Center for Intelligent Material Systems and Structures at VT.
