Research Associate, Mission Systems Division

Gustavo Gargioni is a Research Associate in the Mission Systems Division, Space Domain Awareness and Proximity Operations, at the National Security Institute. He previously worked in Space Lab Engineering for Kevin T. Crofton Aerospace and Ocean Engineering Department at Virginia Tech. Gustavo has an M.S. in Aerospace Engineering, a B.S. in Mechanical/Industrial Engineering from Instituto Maua de Tecnologia in 2002, and a Business Specialization from Fundacao Getulio Vargas in 2005. Since early college, he has pursued entrepreneurial careers in software and industrial engineering. Since 2017, he has been a Graduate Research Assistant for many multidisciplinary projects ranging from Aerospace Engineering applications at the Center for Space Science and Engineering Research (Space@VT), the National Security Institute, and the Kevin T. Crofton Aerospace and Ocean Engineering Department. His significant contributions include the development of the Spacedrones Lab and VT Cubesat missions: VCC Ceres, VT ThickSat-1, and UtProsat-1. His current research and technical activities include: Space mission design. Spacecraft design. Space systems end-of-life remediation. On-orbit servicing. Space debris mitigation systems. p-LEO constellations sustainability. New-space economics. Autonomous distributed systems. Data acquisition systems design. Embedded systems. Magnetic localization. Small satellite integration.
